Smoky quartz with titanite on matrix

This smoky quartz is a special piece because it is still attached to its original host rock, an amphibolite. Growing so close to the matrix, it developed several beautiful dark titanite crystals on its surface, a detail that reveals itself on closer inspection. The tip is lightly coated with chlorite, and chlorite inclusions can also be found inside the crystal, giving this smoky quartz its distinctive colour. Its size is just right: it fits perfectly in one hand and makes a lovely decorative piece. Placed on a stand, it truly comes into its own.

The Story of This Crystal

This crystal comes from a cleft we were lucky enough to discover this summer. Above it lay an old cleft that could be seen from far away. The glacier, however, has melted so much that a large amount of rock debris broke away beneath the old cleft and fell into the bergschrund, exposing a brand-new cleft. The cleft was easy to spot: it showed a large constriction, and chlorite was visible right at the entrance. This crystal comes from deep inside the cleft, but it was still slightly attached to the host rock, which is why it carries those beautiful titanite crystals on its surface. Working at this cleft was not without danger. Luckily, a few large boulders had wedged themselves into the bergschrund, giving us something to stand on. Next year we will most likely no longer be able to reach this cleft, as the glacier will have melted too far. That makes this find all the more special.
